Customer Reviews

          Perfect for our needs

This Panasonic DVD LS86 replaced a boxy, Toshiba 9" DVD/TV player that we had for years. It was a regular CRT, and worked very well as a DVD player for road trips for my family. Too many drops out of the car ended its career.
We then researched the various DVD / LCD players. Our biggest dislike of what we researched was the picture and the sound. Too many players had low viewing angles, and too many required headsets to listen. Well, we wanted our kids to be able to watch roadtrip DVDs without completely tuning us out (in other words, without headsets), and to be able to see the picture from both sides of the backseat. Thus, we didn’t really buy anything and on the next trip our kids had to actually read books (Auugghh - mean parents!!!)
After that trip we really just lucked into this Panasonic. I went to the local Big Box electronics store, and they told me this one had just come out. It was marked really low, and they told me to try it and see if it met my requirements. If it didn’t they promised I could bring it back - no questions asked (I was skeptical).
Well, there was no need. This player works like a charm. The sound is perfect (not too loud, nor so soft that my kids require headsets - even on loud roads), the picture is very visible from both sides of the car, and its portability makes it easy to mount (on a strap between the two front-seat headrests). Plus, it’s easy to hide when we’re out of the car, or to simply tote into a hotel room.
The battery life (on full brightness and probably full volume) usually gets my kids through about 1-1/2 movies. Then I just plug the thing into a cigarette lighter. Frankly, nothing could be easier.
We’ve had this around a year now, and we are very happy with it. We had no other needs for a player, and this one gets highest marks all around.
Great job, Panasonic! This has been perfect for our needs.

Solid choice for portable DVD-its a compromise

We just bought a van and did not want to spend $1500 for the overhead DVD player. I researched portable DVDs thoroughly and decided on this compromise. Picture is not as good as some, but sound is decent, and unit is built to withstand some abuse. I tested battery life, and as expected, did not get anywhere near the 13 hour battery life advertised. I used the daylight setting for brightness and had the volume up to max level to recreate real use conditions. The DVD player lasted 5 hours. I am sure if you use the "moonlight" setting (darker pic), you will get longer battery life, but that is not how we will be using the DVD player. We want the best pic possible. So am happy with this player so far. We used the MoJo DVD mount for between the front seats and the unit works well-the mount is easily installed/removed. It could be better materials, but we were happy to get away from the hanging bag option. Also, the audio out port is directly in the path of the velcro attachment on the MoJo, so not ideal, but the port can still be utilized.

          Excellent portable DVD player

Purchased this model, as I wanted a small DVD player with excellent resolution and battery life. This unit provided enough battery life to view three full length movies on the Honolulu to Chicago flight and the video quality for such a small screen was fabulous. I recommend this model for anyone who needs a small screened portable DVD player. You might pay more for other models, however I don’t think you will find a better value.

By Ok2bclever (Michigan, USA) Reviews of Sony DVP FX 820

I use this portable player as a larger monitor than the cam’s swing out LCD both framing, focusing and for shooting angles where the flip out is less than practical.

The screen will twist and flip so it is lying flat against the player which makes it easier to mount on a bracket for tripod use.

The speakers are about as tinny as all the other portables, but that is why they have a headphone jack on these portables and speaking of that this one has two built in headphone jacks.

All the controls are handily on the bottom of the screen section so are accessible even when you have the unit folded against the player portion and it also comes with a remote control.

The resolution of this portable’s monitor is hands above any other I have owned, used or seen.

The battery lasts a pleasantly nice amount of time as well.

It has played DVD-R, -RW, +R and +RW, DL, CD, CD-RW, MP3 and digital photos for me in both 4:3 and 16:9 dimensions.

Not sure what else you could ask out of a portable unit, fully recommend this player/monitor.

Great value

This product is just as described, I was pleasantly surprised at the sound quality as well as the picture on the dvd. The flash pictures downloaded from the flash drive are ok, but I can deal with the mediocre picture quality for the price battery life is also decent. This product came with all i needed just plug and play I would recommend.

Better than the expensive ones!

This is my third portable DVD player in less than a year, and even though it is the cheapest of the three, it is by far the best! This thing plays anything I throw at it! I also use it as a picture viewer via the sd slot. The usb is a nice feature as well. The picture and sound are quite acceptable for something in this price range and beyond. It may not be as ruggedly built as my Philips, but I am confident it will hold up as long as I use a little comon sense. For the price and the features, I really don’t care if it won’t tolerate mishandling. I love this thing and will probably buy another one if it does break. They say you get what you pay for, but with this player, you get a lot more than what you pay for!

Best For the Cost of the Product

I purchased the Sony DVPFX810 primarily for longer duration air travel. The unit is inexpensive, but it works as well as any expensive multimedia notebook computer, only the Sony offers a lot more battery life. I am averaging 4 hours of play time with headsets, as is the Sony unit. The image is bright, color is good and controls, remote or on-unit, are easy to use. The ability to swivel the screen around works really well when the lump sitting in the seat in front of me needs to recline in my lap. Swiveling the screen on the base moves it out away from the seat back. Sound without headphones is weak and of poor quality. Sound, volume and quality, through headphones is better than good, but will not reach ear shattering levels. The packaging is good. The finish doesn’t show handling scratches and it drops right into a backpack. I have had no problems with the unit.

Unfortunately, bad movies are still bad movies when viewed on the Sony, so Ground Hog Day is still almost painful to watch.

When shopping at Best Buy for a portable DVD player, I tried a Toshiba, the Panasonic LS86 and asked about a Sony. My salesperson, who was knowledgeable, steered me away from the Sony, saying he didn’t like it because it has a "glossy screen." So I tried the current Toshiba 9" and the Panasonic LS86, touted for its 13 hour battery life. I selected the LS86 because it has better blacks, meaning the Toshiba had a more washed out picture. I took the LS86 home and while learning how to use it I was pleased at the degree of control you have. (Yes, this will soon be a review of the Sony DVP FX 820 - I returned the LS86 and got an FX820 - but first a little more about the Panasonic.)

With the LS86 you have great control: you can control the brightness of the subtitles, you can reposition them, you have several factory presets for picture and one user picture preset, there are degrees of noise reduction available, a number of audio settings to control the tone of the sound and its stereo spread. It seemed great except for one thing: the picture was slightly disappointing. Text was awfully chunky. The edges of things looked rough. In a word, it had a lot of aliasing.

I went on line to read some reviews of the LS86. I’d read reviews prior to shopping but, somehow, hadn’t found any for the current Sony player, the DVP FX 820. On my second internet visit I found the Sony right away. When I learned it has much greater resolution, I packed up the LS86, went back to the store and exchanged.

Sony DVP FX 820 has lots more pixels and that makes for a lots better picture. It has less control over those pixels, but as nice as adjustments are, they don’t compensate for a poorer image. So, in my mind, the Sony is better.
___________

The downside of the FX820: this model has a fair amount of edge enhancement, or sharpening. And there’s no way to control it. I’m not going to describe what it looks like, because if you own one of these units and edge enhancement is below your radar, why point it out.

What about the glossy screen the salesperson mentioned? When he said "glossy screen," I imagined that the screen itself was shiny. What he was referring to is the fact that the screen is surrounded by a shiny black plastic bezel. A matte finish would be less distracting, but the shiny plastic should not be a deal breaker.

The contrast of the default LCD settings: I had to work a little with the "Backlight" and "Contrast" settings to keep the blacks from being crushed. Otherwise, things like someone’s head of black hair might lose their detail.

    _____________

Summary: A good solid unit with a consumer-oriented design philosophy. The controls are basic and fairly simple to operate. The picture seems to be the best in its price range. The audio, through headphones, is fine.
